Statement of Intent
For my print option of coursework, I will create a current
affairs magazine with print cover prototypes and website prototypes. My
intended target audience is young adults, 18-35 due to the modern topics and
areas of news I will include in my prototypes. My target audience will likely
be well-educated university students as they want to stay informed on current
affairs. These students’ lifestyle will likely include creative vocations as
this will match the creative and cultural news topics included. For example, my
magazine will be aimed at people who are interested in art, film and TV and
culture news. In my mood board, I included images of people at art galleries
and socialising with friends. I also included images of protests and the Labour
party as the target audience is young, liberal or left-wing people. Due to this
being a younger audience, they will likely read the news online and on mobile
phones.
I aim to represent my target audience through my products
using the design and content included in both the print and website prototypes.
The design should be simplistic and modern, and the content will target my
audience by using stories of culture, tv & film and foreign news. News
stories should also include young people and issues affecting them. These stories
should show them in a positive light to have my target audience have a
preferred reading of the magazine. For example, protest stories and new trends
will be including due to them being trendy, modern and rebellious.
The synergy of the magazine industry between print and
online versions creates a brand and this is what I aim to make. By creating a print
magazine and website prototype, I will link the magazine brand throughout
platforms. This synergy in the magazine industry creates a more powerful product
with more audience interaction and therefore more revenue. Another element of
my target audience that adds to this synergy is the young audience using apps
and mobile phones. I will create this brand by having a consistent house style
across the print and website prototypes, likely simplistic to create a clean
and easy-to-navigate style. I would aim to create a house style that would fit
into a Conde Nast portfolio due to the simple but clean, modern style of
magazine.
The colour scheme for my prototypes would likely be
simplistic to keep them from looking messy. Main colours I would use across my
magazines would be white, black and grey as these are formal whilst blending
well with each other. Other colours I would include are red and blue as they
are primary colours but also striking. Fonts I will use will be easy to read,
formal but well rounded to create an attractive cover and brand. Layout of my
magazine will likely follow the main conventions, with the masthead being at the
top and including a main image on the front cover. However, my webpages will
include more interactive features to create synergy between products and
support the idea of an active audience.
